Everyone seems to be back from holiday, so it is a full house and Alexis is in the chair. Jamie of Sliced Bread Animation, asks for connections to property developers and I remember that he did some animation a few months ago for an expensive West End property that was not getting the interest its owners felt it deserved. Simon Dickens of YouMeHeShe architects having met the son of an Indian maharajah, tells us of their former life which included access to 600 concubines, riding into their modest home on an elephant – the doors had to be quite big apparently – another one like this would be an ideal referral.

Maria Davies-Morgante of SanLamere is back and subbing for Mike Nightingale. Her latest line is aerated shower heads and taps which enable the job to be done using less water.

As a reminder that the holidays are over, Kisty asks for referrals for Christmas parties and on the same note, David Coburn reminds us of the networking jolly 16th October to see The Jersey Boys where the refreshments and one third of the ticket cost will be paid for out of BRX Bond Street funds. Mike Segall saw the show in Chicago – amazing, he said. David will chase us for our cheques next week.

Fiona Gale reminds us that Corporate Responsibilty is a match for and complement to, PR and marketing – not a substitute nor is it charity. It is meant to give a return which can be measured and involve the staff of the client company concerned. Julian of WPA spent a week at Brent Cross and picked up 40 enquiries. His 10 minutes is mainly about their base product which has capped benefits and no underwriting, making claims very simple and the policy good value at £15 per month. There is a group policy for Bond Street members. George Metcalfe our master coach, asks if coaching could be covered under stress treatment and Julian will check. His e-mail about the amazing violinist concert on 1st September will be sent again.

Karelia does not feel optimistic about the property market and after 10 hours of brainstorming to find a new name for Chase Property Services, finally gets somewhere with Caroline Hampstead – watch this space. Caroline herself is romanticising the blurb on packets of tea these days, and in her research finds a gaffe on an expensive packet of green tea.

Mike Segall would like intros to printers and is kind enough to tell me that my 10 minute slot of 10th October is still open. Paul Marmor is now an international litigator and has been recently been working on behalf of Indian business clients which might lead to a referral from yours truly in the future. He will be attending an international litigation conference in Sao Paulo in October and any Brazilian legal connections here would be very welcome.

Matt Bird of Sayers Butterworth asks for referrals of people who are being investigated by HMRC. A client who left the UK in 2002 is being investigated but the case being presented by HMRC is not as strong as their bluff makes out so with HMRC dragging their feet, it looks like they are going to take the matter to the HMRC Commissioners – the first stage in what could be a long legal process. If successful, this could undermine a recent HMRC victory in Court in a non-resident case.

Continuing the international theme, Mike Chan of Abbey Alliance Mortgages is getting and would like more of, referrals for overseas buyers of UK property – often this is where their children are coming to the UK for part of their education.

Lewis Malka’s advice to a guy who wanted to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend on holiday when he did not know her finger size results in his buying her a goldfish before the holiday where she accidentally finds the ring in the bottom of the bowl! This gives time for the ring to be altered. He has an inspiration/ideas page on his website.

Emma will be taking over from Gavin Hirst at Photowonder BUT she is the former next door neighbour of the other Gavin. Alexis reminds us that 35 per cent of absences fom work are due to back pain – easily sorted under their 5 main headings – osteopathy, massage, acupuncture, hypnosis & counselling.

Jamie will be posting member info onto the new website at the weekend so get your details over to him ASAP

Morning all,

A really enjoyable meeting last Friday although I’m sure it’s a distant memory since we had the extended weekend. Numbers of referrals are up from the previous week so thanks for digging deep and pushing those brain cells.

Also a very practical and insightful 10 mins presentation from George “The Money Doctor” – Now I just need some money to invest!

Referrals – 17, Recommendations – 11, Leads – 15, Tips – 3

Please remember that if anyone has any examples of business derived from the group’s referral system then if you can see me next week we can agree how to feedback to the group (although we need to be careful about keeping the time down).

Have a great weekend

Regards.

An old story posted on a friend of mine’s blog…

There’s a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place – And, after all, isn’t that what life is all about?

You can read the rest here: Paid in full with a glass of milk – a parable

My 10 minutes scheduled for early October was recently swapped with Julian to help him, but noticing one earlier week was free – should I swap, I was thinking only last week?? Caroline reads my mind on Wednesday as in the middle of another task she flashes up that today is available and “faster than Usain Bolt” I grab it which should leave 10th October free??

In my 10 minutes I explain how accidentally I ended up doing Employee Benefits and telling a business owner that they could actually afford to retire now while they are in their 40s. The questions after my 10 minutes go very well and I will be having some talks with people on starting off or maybe tweaking their financial planning. To close my bit on this meeting, the “safest investments” i.e. cash and gilt-edged securities which many people feel most comfortable with at the moment, actually give the worst performance in the long term as the chart from the Barclays Capital Study clearly showed.

Otherwise there is not the same overcrowding at the table as last week with a few subs and 3 people who were not able to find them. Louise Hackett of Delfont Mackintosh theatres stands in for Maurice Press of DRT who is on holiday. Fiona Gale is back with a charming story of 3 managers and making Corporate Responsibility a USP. Mike Segall explains that the initial consultation cost for his marketing services is £350.

Jamie Denham’s sub explains that he has been in animation for nearly 10 years during which he has done work for BBC, ITV & Channel 4. Traffic delays cause George Metcalfe to arrive just in time and tells us the importance of “open questions” finishing the meeting with an inspiring Helen Keller quote “Ask not to be equal to the task rather ask for a task…….”

Kirsty’s sample chocolates including a scrumptious turkish delight are passed around the table and she shows us a chocolate house she has made for Karelia’s clients. Karelia’s company needs a new name as there are lots of Chase property companies – thinking caps on? Yours truly had treat fun with naming new flavours in the Walker Crisps competition earlier this week. Zoe is back and OPUS now offer broadband as well as Siemens communications equipment.

Richard Houldsworth of Splat Print is doing some printed wallets for a car retailer as the previous printer did not do a very good job. Lewis Malka tells us of a replacement engagement ring which was robbed from a couple on holiday in the Maldives – their insurance company picked up the cost and the replacement was ready when they returned from holiday. He will shortly be off to The Big Apple for their marathon and has raised £2,000 of his target £10,000 sponsorship.

Mike Nightingale tells us of a typical week where objects insured include a £2 and half million car, a vintage tractor as well as his talking to a haulage contractor.

Dexter Moscow tells another charming story in his 60 seconds.

Father is on holiday and phones his son in Florida. Your mother and I are getting divorced after 35 years! Son says not to do anything and that he will be on a plane and see his parents following weekend. Next father phones his daughter in Australia. She will be there at the weekend as well. In the hotel room, father turns to his wife “Well that’s your birthday with the children sorted out!”

Moral? Often it’s how you say it that really matters.

Russell Bryant of X&Y (part of Chime group) stands in for Roy Duncan – they specialise is marketing to women and in one case, increased sales by 22% by retraining staff at a call centre. Caroline used to work for Camelot and was involved in drafting the Students’ Charter in the days of the John Major government.

Have an interesting 1:1 with Mike Chan who explains the Equity Shield product where they are UK distributor. BBC Three Counties Radio phone me about a mortgage story in the press today – interest rates are coming down – but by the time I get back to them 10 minutes later, they have found someone else to cover the item. Win some, lose some.

Have a good weekend – for me it’s glider aerobatics tomorrow :-) and for a different day out on Saturday 6th September, don’t forget www.gp2008.co.uk

Afternoon all,

A really enjoyable meeting this morning although the numbers do look a little low. Can we get our thinking caps on and try and get the number of referrals back up next week.

Also a very enjoyable and creative 10 mins presentation from Hiten from Revolution Creative Agency – I thought the sing up program was particularly fantastic (I wonder who printed that?).

Referrals – 13, Recommendations – 9, Leads – 14, Tips – 2

Thanks to Liz Sorton for her feedback regarding getting business from not only Kirsty’s referral but also from a referral that Liz received from that referral (a referral’s referral). This proves it’s not always be about quantity it’s quality too.

If anyone else has any other examples then if you can see me next week we can agree to feedback to the group (although we need to be careful about keeping the time down).

Have a great weekend

Regards.

Back after 3 weeks and though we are in the holiday period, 5 subs and 1 visitor are there to ensure that seating is at a premium and a good incentive not to be late in future. Kerelia kicks off the 60 seconds round and mentions that she has signed a new deal with a concierge agency. Much of her business comes from relocation clients.

Jamie asks for help his his PR which my half-addled brain transmogrifies into RPR (What’s that? I ask) confusing it with the RDR or Retail Distribution Review that FSA-regulated people like me have to deal with. He also recommends TWITTER, as has got his first piece of business from there with a Digital Agency.

Lewis wants intros to insurance brokers as he can do pukka jewellery valuations for insurance purposes. Mike Chan mentions “put options” where you can buy back your house at the same price if the market drops – something that might be a useful marketing angle for in2 Consulting.

Gavin M-H stands up and Mike Nightingale, Gavin H and others burst into song as it is his 39th birthday which means he was born on the first day of the Woodstock festival….He offers a prize for the first clever geezer to tell him and maybe all of us, the genus of the Hobby bird? Also wants a venue for new networking group to be held on a Friday afternoon. You Me He She sub wants contact for people with a passion about India as the V&A are putting on an exhibition.

Sub Louise Hassett from Delfont Mackintosh Theatres may be able to help with finding venue for American speaker Jim Ziegler in October. George M has a sponsor for a new (coffee table) book – he writes one every 18 months.

Martin Dunne seems to have 3 teachers in his family – nearly as many as in mine! Dexter Moscow of Audience Dynamics, subbing for Kirsty of Perfectly Tempered does his 60 seconds as a rhyme about a farmer with 3 daughters with 3 suitors, showing the impotance of having the right name. My name’s Chuck…

Justin’s referral requests include one for a hairdresser prepared to work in a salon in Brighton which my tango teacher may be able to help with – a good example of “small world” or the power of networking. Justin maybe able to help witha client of mine who is looking for £1.25 million funding and is kind enough to offer to have a look at the business plan.

David Coburn brings along Jack from TMCards as a visitor who produces personalised playing cards used by professionals as well as the more usual suspects and in a short 1:1 afterwards, points out their USP in marketing – people don’t throw them away.

Hiten does the 10 minutes and Revolution DESIGN is now Revolution Creative. Local authority and public sector work is an increasing part of his work and the posters and other material he did for Hackney council for example, is top class.
