Morning All,

An enjoyable meeting on Friday and very pleased to say that numbers of referrals still riding high.

Great presentation from Emily Dennick from Sherrards about Wills – Never looked forward to dying so much!

Referrals – 18, Recommendations – 10, Leads – 5, Tips – 6

Please remember that if anyone has any good examples of business derived from the group’s referral system then please pass on the good news during our weekly referral round.

Have a great week and see you this Friday

Regards.

Good to know from Chairman Mike Nightingale of Green Park Insurance Services that my blogs are read and appreciated and helping people’s ratings in cyberspace. Ideal clients for him are ones who want to insure their private jets, stamp collections and steam yachts with one policy. Owning a yacht has been variously described as “tearing up five pound notes while standing under the shower” or as J P Morgan famously said, “If you have to ask how much they cost, you can’t afford one!”

Maurice Press of Disability Resource Team opens the 60 seconds with rhyme, presumably prompted by a potential client asking “What’s the point?” of putting everything into braille etc. Maurice also wants the tune Rule the world in MP3 form – I have an iTunes account if that will help, but doubt if I am the only one – cost 79p a track! Interestingly, both he and Alexis of The Happiness Centre want intros to Local Authorities – the latter after a successful direct mail campaign. She is happy to share her experience here with anyone considering direct mail. Marketing like this Mike Segall points out, is often the first thing to be cut when in a recession – just the wrong time to cut back.

Fiona Gale of Only Connect Solutions tells of a real case where where CR paid off with a builder who now offers apprenticeships funded by the Government. This was after he started talking to schools and has a healthier bottom line as a result. BTW If you are ever stuck for content for your 60 seconds, a real life story is far more interesting than saying the same stuff each week “we do whatever etc”.

Hiten of Revolution Creative is still working with Kiss FM while Gavin M-H of JDPM wants intros to HR directors to talk about incentive schemes. Laura Firestone of HSBC mentions how popular banks are at present and reassuringly mentions the relative stability of their share price. Customers there can be thankful that the old Midland Bank (remember that anybody?) is now part of their group, one of the world’s largest in terms of market capitalisation. Laura also brings along Aynur Cikci of Nanoboron distributors of a petrol additive which can increase engine performance by up to 15 per cent and have the independent data to prove it. Justin Beavis is involved with a new TV channel – more info please, as I had a meeting yesterday with some people doing the same thing…..

Louise Hassett of Delfont Mackintosh Theatres reminds us of the seven shows they are running: Avenue Q, Les Miserables (aka The Glums) Ivanov, Mama Mia, Jersey Boys (which some of us at BRX will be seeing 16th October) Eurobeat and 6 Characters in search of an author. Starting 3rd December will be the RSC Winter season: Hamlet (sold out) Mid-summer Night’s Dream and Taming of the Shrew.

Karelia’s business is now called Manse & Garret and with new business cards, means I can spell it correctly! Recent clients include tenants willing to pay £15,000 a week. Roy Duncan’s sub is Rodrigo Macos of Secforce a computer security company that (with your permission) will hack into your server to see how safe you are. In the same vein at the end of the meeting, Fiona Gale mentions a competition for one of her clients where if you can break the computer encryption, the prize is US$ 1 million.

Zoe Antin of Opus Telecom wants referrals for companies that are moving as that could be a good time to ditch an ancient bit of telephone equipment which might not survive the move anyway. Mike Chan is back explaining that his business is now split into two – Shadow Finance who we saw last week doing the mortgage side of things, while he looks after the ancilliary side with products like EquityShield where you can insure your home against a fall in value.

Yours truly mentions the phone calls that in2 Consulting is getting from clients who are worried about the credit crunch. Good news one day like the American US$700 Billion bank rescue provokes the biggest ever one day market rises with a similar fall when some people question its viability. People still want someone to talk to, in spite of (or maybe because of) the avalanche of news and information out there.

One notable absentee is Christian Ingerslev of Danesoft. I had referred a lady to him who helps companies pitching for big tenders, and caught him as he was catching a plane at Heathrow. Christian is member of a Danish ex-pats poker dice club who delight in playing this game in whacky places. As I write, he casting his die in the DMZ between North & South Korea, having been guided into this spot by a Swiss Army general but sadly, is unable to take any pictures or send any naughty holiday postcards from this ultimate “off the beaten track” location. We all look foward to seeing him in one piece next week.

Caroline Hampstead has worked with Orange, BMW & lastminute.com (you might remember the latter’s “Brazilian or Hollywood” poster in the Underground last year which was her concept) and would like contacts in the music industry, where her advertising agency background would be useful.

Sherrards bring up reinforcements as it is their turn for the 10 minute slot. Paul Marmor distributes details of Debt Collection seminars they are holding, giving me an excuse to talk to my business owner clients and then intoduces Emily Dunnicks of their Private Client department. It is good to have someone else talk about the cheerful stuff: making wills, divorce, civil partnerships and Inheritance Tax. Cherry on the cake is the thought of losing your marbles, with Enduring Powers of Attorney (a riveting read at 26 pages) replacing the Lasting Powers of Attorney (a measley 4 pages) These uplifting documents are occasionally referred to as Living Wills (my words – not hers) and take 6 weeks to register. As Emily said, just the stuff to cheer you up at 8 am on a Friday morning!

If the foregoing is too much and you need a tipple to help you get though the next few days, Gavin Hirst of PhotoWonder is obliging with drinks next Friday 3rd October at The Larrik in Fulham from 4 pm onwards http://www.capitalpubcompany.com/larrik/index.html before jetting back to Oz. Let’s give him a good send off, as the group will miss him.

Off home now with the lovely chocolates from Kirsty’s Perfectly Tempered which I must keep carefully till next Saturday 4th October for the Neptune Lodge Dining night, I emailed you all about 2 weeks ago.

Morning All,

Lovely meeting on Friday and very pleased to say that numbers of referrals are certainly up there where we need them to be.

A fab 10 mins presentation from Christian Ingerslev and Danesoft about Website creation and marketing surveys – Now I know that he hangs around Schools and Colleges I see him in a whole new light.

Referrals – 20, Recommendations – 6, Leads – 7, Tips – 4

Please remember that if anyone has any good examples of business derived from the group’s referral system then please pass on the good news during our weekly referral round.

Have a great week and see you this Friday

Regards.

Mike Chan sends Stephanie as a sub from Shadow Finance (we’re behind you all the way!) as Abbey Alliance have merged.

Richard Houldsworth reminds us that 93% of customers prefer something to touch and feel and is sponsoring a Young Enterprise initiative for 14-18 year olds. Martin Dunn of Sayers Burtterworth wants referrals to directors of AIM companies and can save 25-50% on accountacy fees. Alexis speaks about talent retention – actually cheaper than replacing good people who have left – might have a referral here as I am having a conference call on Monday with clients of an accountancy firm who want to set up a comprehensive employee benefits scheme and enter for a caring Employer Award.

Jamie Denham of Sliced Bread Animation is moving to Shoreditch near yours truly, so perhaps we will meet more often and he wants people with bugs – not the contagious variety, he has the golf type in mind.

Gavin M-H starts talking to Lewis calling him Lawrence, a trend which continues through the meeting and would like intros to companies considering changing their name – or maybe need to be reminded what it is.

Richard Church the photographer subs for Zoe and her Siemens equipment impressing with his train journey from Croydon to Victoria after photographing the world’s ugliest politician (give us a clue please!) Perfect example of wonderful modern technology where it is quicker to take the train than send the pictures by e-mail!

Roy Duncan wants Financial Directors and Controllers while Mike Nightigale reminds after his 10 minutes last week, that his service is largely about consolidating rather than pure money saving. Simon Dickens of YouMeHeShe architects is busy enough not to need any referrals and keeping him company, Tino Marco wants a holiday home for his mum for her Cyprus holiday getting 3 referrals as a result.

Caroline does a hachet job on a client’s home web page reducing the verbiage fom 500 to 200 words rather like clients who have visited educogym where Neera Menon is subbing for Karelia of Mans & Garrett Property Selection. The latter is still looking for honest reliable people who can be at a client’s new home when they move in and help with little things like: just being there, making a cup of tea or perhaps doing a bit of shopping.

Gavin Hirst’s booming voice reminds us that Paul Marmor of Sherrards solicitors likes suing people and tells the men not die intestate or perhaps look at this website http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/info/info.asp Christian wants intros to the House of Commons where there is a huge tender for surveys going which reminds me that I must refer Sarah Inness to you – she helps people with big tenders.

Mike Segall mentions that while 47% of new business comes from existing clients, 43% comes from cold calling which most people hate. A welcome visitor is Mike Bradley of 1st Page Prophets an SEO company who reads out a testimonial where the client says he under promised and over delivered.

Always trying to maintain a cheerful note, my own 60 seconds reminds everyone that this will not be the last economic bloodbath as I was there in 1973 which with hindsight was a very useful financial lesson. George Soros thinks we are still going into the storm rather than coming out of it and a financial plan could provide a path through it,

Louise Hassett of Delfont Mackintosh tells us of the press night of Ivanov by Anton Checkov starring Richard Branagh – you will see the posters on the underground. Kirsty wants intros to event organisers and Hiten is working with Kiss FM a lot. Lewis Malka variously referred to as Lawrence and Elliott throughout the meeting now has £3,000 sponsorship money for his NY marathon with 6 weeks to go.

Master coach George Metcalfe is back fitting a blonde joke into his 60 seconds and gives us the five easiest ways to get new business i) repeat business ii) ask customers for referrals iii) keep in touch with them iv) strategic alliances (no money cost) and v) showcasing.

Christian’s 10 minutes maintains the high standard where the actual questions in his surveys are crucial but letting people write their own comments can poduce much more useful data. A manager like the guy fom The Office thinks he is wonderful but his colleagues think otherwise.

Lastly, Gavin Hirst founder member of Photowonder in the UK is sadly leaving us for Oz 3rd October and will be buying drinks all day at a venue to be decided – starting at 09.30 hrs after the normal meeting. Hope we all heard that correctly ;-)

As discussed this morning, this event is quite high-end (I shared the lift with the CEO of P&O Properties) and worth attending for many members. There’s an invite document here with a fax back form here.

Following on from the success of our previous events, we are pleased to hold another networking event on Wednesday 1st October from 6-8.30pm and would like to invite you, and perhaps a colleague.

The Midtown Business Club was launched in September 2007, and membership is open to any company based in, or with an interest in the Midtown area. A copy of our invitation to join is attached that outlines the Club’s aims and objectives. We have over 60 company members, representing many different professions. If you join now, your membership will be valid until 31st December 2009.

Mike Nightingale is back in the chair and for his 60 seconds wants introducers as the commissions they pay can be a useful source of passive income (if you have not read Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad that is what the book is all about).

Several people mention Christmas. Jamie did an animated Advent Calendar for PwC two years ago who want it again. It is an environmentally friendly alternative to Christmas cards. Neera Menon from educo gym reminds us we might want to get in shape before Christmas so we have that extra muscle to burn up that extra food intake we get in the festive season. Her before and after photos of Gavin M-H at 48 Harley Street impress with the loss of inches round the waist and pounds, but strangely he is away on holiday in France – presumably piling them back on. Kirsty Joly’s artisan chocolates will certainly help here – for the guilty, unloved or under-nourished,

Justin has traction – not from overdoing it at educo gym, but rather from potential World Dive Centre investors in the middle east where he will be visiting Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Saudi. Yours truly talks to people about money.

Richard Houldsworth informs us that the way they work is like making love to a beautiful woman i.e. it’s a bit > just getting out the equipment. Continuing this theme, Maurice Press has been brailling documents for the International Fetish Festival to be held in the Barbican 7-10th October but modestly omits telling us if attendees can feel the exhibits as well – for those of you who were away this morning, I am not making this up.

David Coburn is expanding BRX into India and in two of the smaller groups, there are no IT people.

Louise Hassett of Delfont Mackintosh theatres has buyers over from Asia and the USA wanting to do something different while Atul Patel, subbing for Mike Segall asks us to think intelligently and ask “Who really is your client?”

Karelia Scott-Daniels’s company is now Mans & Garrett Property Selection. Mans being a Scottish name for a nice house – think mansion, and showing that they cover the whole property spectrum. When people move in, they like to have someone at the receiving site all day and are looking for occasional workers here (perhaps retired) but above they must be honest and will have to sign various confidentiality agreements because of the market they are in.

Sayers Butterworth tugs our heart strings with a tale of the interesting view that the public at large have of accountants generally. Fiona Gale will give us 3/4 page advertorial in The Guardian Business pages with three profiles of experts in your business, for the derisory wedge of £5,000.

Gavin Hirst has some info from Simon Dickens this week and the latter wants intros into the rag trade in general and tee-shirt distribution in particular. Mike Chan of Abbey Alliance Mortgages announces he should have a stand-in next week so he can have a lie-in Friday mornings and points out the difference between what one of his BTL clients thought was the best mortgage with a 4.99% interest rate, but the 4% Arrangement Fee hardly made it the most suitable.

Caroline Hampstead succinctly shows the power of words where changing dark mild to nutty brown increased one particular beer brand sales by 90% – just what you would expect from a good copywriter.

Paul Marmor of Sherrards reminds us of the importance of good employment contracts and making wills followed by Christian Ingerslev donning his undertaker’s black jacket to tell us about his website content management systems.

Alexis spoke to the HR Director of Harley Davidson last week and reminds us that mediocre performance caused by stress perhaps, can be expensive.

Mike Nightingale’s 10 minutes with slides keeps up the high standard. The insurance cost for a property is the reinstatement or rebuilding cost. This bears no relation to open market value and difficult site access for example, can make a huge difference to the rebuilding cost. His clients are handled by one point of contact (no call centres) and give worldwide all risks cover, so taking a nice painting, laptop and jewellery to their home on France would be covered. Underwriting and valuation are done at outset. He does not mention it, but cheap insurers sometimes underwrite at point of claim i.e. looking for an excuse to avoid paying out. Cheapest can be very poor value.
